Unusually uncommon as a UK,1st edn and particularly in such a high grade as this is.   Visually, the external appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s 30 year-old age and nature, i.e. a children’s book.It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for it’s brightnesss, cleanliness and lack of other or age- acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in a children's book of this age.   With its artwork as vivid and ornate as a Faberge egg, combined with a smooth-as-silk text, keeps this from becoming just another retelling of a classic tale.Cherry Gilchrist draws on 19th-century Russian writer Afanasyev's version for her elegant rendition, maintaining his dark undertones in the story of sibling treachery and mystical adventure.                           Artist Andrei Troshkov accentuates these themes, using a midnight-hued canvas for his distinctly Russian, intensely coloured illustrations.Troshkov was born in 1969 in the Southern Russian town Krasnodor,to an artist's family. In 1985 he became a student of the art school in the town, where he studied book design and decorative art and became interested in book illustration. His work is inspired by the turn-of-the-century group pf Russian artists that included Somov, Biliblin and Dobuzinski and his favourite writers are Hoffman and other romantic authors.Since 1991 he has lived and worked in Moscow. His commissions to date have included illustrating an Encyclopedia of Nature for Sabashnikov Publishers.                           Alexander Nikolayevich Afanasyev was a Russian Slavist and ethnographer best known for publishing nearly 600 East Slavic and Russian fairy and folk tales,it being one of the largest collections of folklore in the world. Though not strictly Russian, this collection included folk tales from Ukraine and Belarus alongside Russian folk tales. The first edition of his collection was published in eight volumes from 1855 to 1867,earning him the reputation of being the Russian counterpart to the Brothers Grimm at the time. The influence of these folk tales can be seen in the works of many writers and composers, notably Igor Stravinsky with 'The Firebird' as a ballet and orchestral concert work, along with Petrushka and L'Histoire du Soldat.   Written [the ballet] for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Michel Fokine in collaboration with Alexandre Benois and others on a scenario based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner. It was first performed at the Opera de Paris [Palais Garnier] on 25th June,1910 and was an immediate success, catapulting Stravinsky to international fame and leading to future Diaghilev–Stravinsky collaborations including Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913).              Please contact the seller, particularly ALL overseas buyers, for correct shipping/P+p quotes BEFORE placing your order, especially if ordering any multiples.
